PETE’S AUDACIOUS AUDAX*

DISTANCE: 200 MILES!
Pete is undertaking a mammoth cycling challenge during lockdown in support of our two favourite charities, FrankWater and Bristol Sport Foundation. Here, he tells us why:
“As an ambassador for both ‘Break the Cycle’ and Frankwater I was acutely aware of the financial impact of this pandemic - things were already difficult prior to Covid19! As a keen cyclist, I knew I needed to pull something out the bag to get people’s attention, and donations, so am cycling a 200 mile route from Bristol to Exeter in a single day, going south via Churchill, Brent Knoll, Bridgwater, Taunton and then into Exeter before skirting back north via Wellington, the Somerset levelsand up over the Mendips.
I was conscious of the logistics around accommodation and transport etc. so completing it in a single day is more appropriate, and certainly significantly more challenging! I’ve roped in Oli Beckingsale† to be my companion and ‘super domestique’ for the day - I have a horrible feeling he’ll treat it like a Sunday morning ride out with his young daughters! (†If you’re not into cycling, Oli is an ex-Olympic and 17 times World Champion pro cyclist and doesn’t notice hills!)
Due to the pandemic, this is the first year that I will be unable to ride the Break the Cycle event that we set up 10 years ago. Sprague Gibbons has been a primary sponsor since its inception and it’s immensely gratifying to be part of it and to support it. Therefore, my donations will be split equally between Bristol Sport Foundation and Frankwater. In 2018, myself and my wife Jane cycled 450kms around rural villages in India for Frankwater to see first-hand the amazing work this charity carries out. Frankwater has helped over 400,000 people in 549 villages access safe,clean drinking water, clean sanitation and hygiene training.
So please if you can spare a few pounds, please do. Put simply, without your support these great charities just won’t survive - and that would be a crying shame”.
